Track Down Former Employees of Companies

Keeping your network alive with new or renewed contacts can lead to valuable business connections.

From the Fast Company Blog:

A guy on that list just forwarded me the URL for the coolest new networking site: Eliyon's CorporateAlumni. I think it's still in beta, but it's worth looking into if you're interested in tracking alumni of various companies to their new jobs. Right now, it tracks 15 million business people.

You type in a company name, and it tells you who works (or once worked) there, with links to information about where they might have gone. You can also search by function. A great way to find old colleagues, or to figure out who, say, the marketing person is at a company where you'd like to work. A boon for job seekers!

Franchising

This consultant firm in Arizona is available for advice to people who are considering franchises of various forms. There is no direct charge for his services, but it looks like you do need to provide some information to pre-qualify. He makes his money from finders fee from the companies that are franchising.

Business Cards

You need to have business cards to hand out in your job search, particularly with networking events and opportunities.

There are several ways to prepare cards during your search. You can print them up on your own, using an ink jet printer and card stock made for that purpose. Another alternative is free business cards (around $5.00 for shipping) from VistaPrint . I have also used I-Print with good success. Their plain cards have logos that can relate to your profession and type of business.

You might consider adding a "mini resume" on the back side of the cards - either attached (like an address sticker) or rubber stamp, that gives the person a quick memory jogger regarding the conversation as they pass along your card to others.

Example

Sales Executive
Automotive Electrical Components

* 14 years direct sales experience
* 12 years exceeding quota (since 1991)
* President's Club Sales Award past 10 years
* Built three < $10k accounts
into $14M business in six years.
