Bull Fighter

Unless you are a writer by profession, spending many hours to create a good strong cover letter for your resume might lead you into a trap - a letter that sounds impressive, but in reality has so much jargon and is so hard to read that it turns off prospective interviewers.

BullFighter is free download program (4 Mb, so it will take a while on dial-up) that will check your cover letter. Bullfighter is software that runs in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, within Microsoft Windows 2000 or XP. It works a lot like the spelling and grammar checker in those applications, but focuses on jargon and readability.

Anti-Virus

One of the last things that you need to worry about in transition is a computer virus getting into your system.

Note that most of the time, if you are careful not to open email attachments or use floppy disks (especially from libraries and schools) you are not likely to really encounter a computer virus.

Most of the time, you really have spyware that is causing strange behavior, slowing things down and adding all sorts of pop-up ads and junk to your screen. Examples include Gator, JetCursor, and similar programs that offer something for free, but then placehidden programs on your system.

Look to my earlier posting on Ad-Aware and try that first before you suspect a virus.

Many, if not most, virus panics are hoaxes - however, they can cause real damage because they panic people into doing things to their own machine. Lots of general hoaxes also involve virus like stories. The best indicator is the phrase "send this to everyone that you know"....

There is a good free antivirus program that we recommend to PBJ, if you do not have a current subscription to one of the major services such as McAfee or Norton Antivirus.

Regardless of which software you use, you MUST update your virus definitions or the anti-virus software is useless, as the virus signatures change every few days. Most services now have an automatic update option that you should select.

Remember also that your machine probably had a factory installed anti-virus with a 60 day trial period that has probably timed out. You need to turn it off (usually right click on it and select exit), then un-install it from the Control Panel. Then you can install AVG or some other virus protection software.

The anti-spyware program that will increase the efficiency of your computer and remove a lot of the materials that cause pop ups is called Ad-Aware, which we spoke about at the PBJ meeting this morning.

There is a video explaining Ad-Aware . This will help explain the product and give you some idea of how to use it.You will need to be on a fast connection ( DSL or Cable Modem or satellite) in order to see the interview. I doubt that it would look very good on a dial up.

The easiest place to download the free version of Ad Aware does not have you wading through the premium for pay version. #
